Reception

Welcome to Reception!

Sending your child to school for the first time is such an exciting milestone for everyone and we look forward to welcoming children into Green Meadow Primary School for the first time.   When your child starts school, they will be in a caring environment and surrounded by supportive adults whose main goal is to ensure that every child is happy, settled and learning to their full potential from day one.

The Early Years is a little different to Key Stage 1 and 2. We implement the EYFS framework, and our learning is based around this curriculum.

Children’s learning is established around the revised Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum encouraging children's independent learning. The revised Early Years Foundation Stage is based on three prime and four specific areas of learning:

  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development
  • Communication and Language
  • Physical development
  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the world
  • Expressive Arts and Design

All children begin reception with different starting points and develop at different rates. By considering your child's needs, interests, and stages of development, we aim to offer challenging and enjoyable learning experiences across the EYFS curriculum.

A practical, playful approach to learning, based on the needs and interests of our children, is delivered mainly through topic-based planning. We teach children individually, in small groups, in classes and in whole cohorts. Through a combination of teacher input and enhanced continuous provision, children develop their learning independently through exploration and challenge, furthered more by effective questioning and responses. Children are encouraged to listen attentively, talk about their experiences, and use language in a variety of ways to communicate with adults and peers.

The Characteristics of Effective Learning are at the heart of the Early Years Curriculum and explore the different ways in which children learn. They highlight the importance of playing and learningactive learning and thinking critically. All the learning experiences we plan for the children allow them to utilise and develop these skills. Our learning environments, both inside and outside, are stimulating and exciting and designed carefully to meet the needs and age/stage of our children. All resources are easily accessible and organised in order develop children’s ability to access the curriculum independently.

It will be a pleasure for us all to watch your child develop into independent learners as they spend more time with us. We can't wait to share their school experiences with you throughout the year.
